Real Kampala prices, specs that matter, and where to buy without getting cheated
A usable student laptop in Kampala starts at UGX 350,000 for a refurbished core i3 machine with 4GB RAM. By UGX 750,000, you get a solid HP EliteBook 840 G3 with 8GB RAM and an SSD, the sweet spot for most university students (prices from Kampala retailers, August 2026).
Spending UGX 1.2 million to 1.8 million gets you into 8th-gen core i5 territory with 256GB SSD. These machines handle programming, design software, and heavy multitasking. Above UGX 2 million, you are looking at brand new laptops with local warranty, a safer bet for business professionals who cannot afford downtime.
Do not spend UGX 200,000 on a laptop. Those machines have 2GB RAM, spinning hard drives, and batteries that die in 30 minutes. You will replace it within a semester and the total cost will be higher than buying the UGX 750,000 option from the start.
8GB RAM is the minimum for 2026. Google Chrome alone eats 2-3GB with a few tabs open. If you are running Zoom, a browser, and Microsoft Word at the same time, 4GB will freeze constantly. SSD storage matters more than processor speed. An SSD makes a 5-year-old laptop feel fast. A brand new machine with a spinning hard drive will still feel slow.
Battery life is critical in Uganda. Power goes out, and your laptop needs to last through a 3-hour lecture plus a group discussion afterward. A refurbished business laptop like a Dell Latitude or HP EliteBook typically holds 3-5 hours on a healthy battery. Ask the seller to run a battery report before you pay.
For most Ugandan university courses, core i5 8th gen with 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD handles everything from research to presentations. Engineering and computer science students should push for 16GB RAM if the budget allows. CAD software and Android Studio are unforgiving on low memory.
Professionals need reliability, not just specs. A laptop that works every morning without surprises. Brand new machines in the UGX 1.5-2.5 million range with local warranty are the safest choice. Refurbished business laptops at UGX 800,000-1.2 million work well too, but buy from a shop with a physical location in Kampala, not a Facebook Marketplace seller.
A 14-inch screen hits the sweet spot between portability and screen real estate. 15.6-inch is better if you work with spreadsheets all day. The backlit keyboard is not a luxury, it is a necessity when Umeme goes off and you are typing by candlelight or phone torch.
If your work involves video editing or 3D rendering, you need a dedicated graphics card and 16GB RAM minimum. These machines start around UGX 2.5 million used. Most office professionals do not need this. A solid core i5 with SSD will run Excel, email, and accounting software without breaking a sweat.
Jiji.ug has the widest selection of used and refurbished laptops in Uganda. Filter by location to Kampala and always meet the seller in person. Test the laptop before paying. Run a quick battery check and look for dead pixels. Most honest sellers will let you test for 10-15 minutes.
The computer shops along Kampala Road and in Nasser Road arcades carry both new and refurbished stock. Prices here are slightly higher than jiji.ug but you get a physical shop to return to if something goes wrong. Many offer 3-month warranties on refurbished units.
Do not buy laptops that come without a charger. It means the charging port is probably damaged and the seller is hiding it. Check that all USB ports work, that WiFi connects, and that the keyboard types every letter. Ugandan humidity can cause keyboard corrosion, so test every key on used machines.
