Why the grid damages appliances here, and the cheapest device that stops it
Power surge protection in Uganda starts at UGX 29,500, and UEDCL's own numbers make the case. A UEDCL network report found 74 percent of the country's 26,577 distribution transformers have no protection on either voltage side. Unprotected transformers fail, and the voltage they feed your house fails with them.
The strain is measurable. Between May 2025 and March 2026 UEDCL logged 4,486 hours of outages, losing 20.75GWh worth about Shs12.33 billion (Daily Monitor, May 2026). Of 94 transformers inspected, 36 were critically loaded. Overloaded gear means voltage that wanders instead of holding at the 240 volts domestic supply is rated for.
Three faults do the damage. The grid drifts above and below the rated 240 volts at peak hours. When supply returns after an outage, the inrush spikes for a second before it settles, and that second is what kills a power supply board. Then there's lightning, and Uganda gets two rainy seasons of it.
None of that needs a strike on your roof. A fault two streets away travels down the same wiring, so your neighbour's overloaded line is your problem too.
A surge protector absorbs short sharp spikes. A voltage protector cuts the supply when voltage leaves a safe range. They fix different faults, and most Ugandan homes need both.
The Klass Power Guard (UGX 29,500 to UGX 32,000) is the spike absorber. Plug a TV or fridge through it and it catches the transient on the way in. The Klass AVP30 (UGX 122,500) is the voltage protector: when mains sits too high or too low for minutes, it switches off and waits. Neither stops a direct strike. Protect anything with a motor or a circuit board, in order of replacement cost. The fridge first, because a failed compressor costs more than the fridge did. Then the TV, washing machine, and decoder. Chargers and laptops last.
Order matters because UGX 29,500 in front of a UGX 3 million fridge is the cheapest insurance in the house. Can you only protect one thing this month? Protect the fridge.
One honest limit: a power guard is rated for transients, not the sustained overvoltage a failed neutral sends down a line. If lights stay abnormally bright for minutes rather than flashing, kill the main breaker and call UEDCL. No plug-in device is built to ride that out.
Unplug expensive gear during a storm. A protector handles a spike, not a strike on the pole outside, and the only certain protection is physical separation from the supply.
Don't daisy-chain extension cords. Every extra joint can arc, and arcing is a surge source inside your own house. Replace any socket that's loose, discoloured, or warm to touch, because those are already failing.
Check your earthing. A protector works by diverting energy to ground, so if the house has no earth wire it has nowhere to send it. An electrician adding proper earthing costs far less than the appliances it saves, and without it every device you buy does half a job.
