Size, type, and power use explained with real prices from yoola.ug.
Fridge buying in Uganda comes down to three choices: size, type, and power use. Get the size wrong and food spoils or you overpay. Get the type wrong and you hate opening the door. Get the power draw wrong and your Umeme bill surprises you every month. Here is how to get all three right.
Most Ugandan homes need a fridge between 120 and 340 litres. A single door starts around UGX 389,000 (CHiQ) while a 561L side-by-side reaches UGX 3,024,000 (Hisense). Match capacity to household size, not to brand name. A family of five does not need a 561L fridge, and a single person does not need to pay for one.
| Fridge | Capacity | Price (UGX) |

For a shop, bar, or guesthouse, a chest freezer often beats a fridge. The Hisense 130L chest freezer costs UGX 534,600 and freezes far more bulk stock than a same-price fridge. For a bedsitter or office, a mini fridge like the Hisense 60L at UGX 313,600 is all you need.
Single door fridges are the cheapest to buy and run, but their freezer is a small shelf, not a proper freezer. Double door fridges split fridge and freezer into two compartments and suit most families. Side-by-side fridges hold the most food and look premium, but they cost more to buy and draw the most power.
For a normal Ugandan household, a double door between 200 and 340 litres hits the sweet spot of price, space, and running cost. No-frost double doors cost more up front but save you the monthly ice-scraping in the freezer.
A fridge runs 24 hours a day, so its power draw matters more than its purchase price. At Umeme's standard domestic rate of about Shs756 per unit, a 120L single door costs roughly Shs15,900 a month to run. A 260L double door costs around Shs25,000. A 560L side-by-side costs close to Shs45,400.
These are estimates: the real figure depends on how often you open the door, the room temperature, and your thermostat setting. If your average consumption stays under 100 units a month, you also get your first 15 units at the Shs250 lifeline rate, which trims the bill further.
If your area gets frequent load shedding, a solar DC fridge is worth a look. The ADH 90L solar DC fridge costs UGX 1,330,000 and runs straight off a panel and battery, so a day-long outage does not spoil your food. A 150L solar DC chest freezer costs UGX 1,505,000.
Pick the size first, then the type, then check power. A single person or couple does fine with a 120L to 160L single door. A family of three to five needs a 200L to 270L double door. Large families, guesthouses, or small shops should look at 340L and up.
Before you order, do four quick checks. Measure your doorway and the floor space, because a 560L side-by-side will not fit through a narrow Kampala corridor. Budget for a voltage stabiliser, since Ugandan power fluctuates and a fridge motor does not forgive it. Decide between no-frost and manual defrost. Confirm the seller's warranty and delivery area before you pay.
