What each type costs to buy, what it costs to run on today's tariff, and which one survives your water pressure

The gap you should care about is not the one at the till. It is the running cost. Domestic power averages UGX 779.4 a unit on the ERA end-user schedule UEDCL is billing on, before 18% VAT.

Distribution matters as much as price. A 7kg machine suits one or two people. A family of five washing bedsheets and school uniforms every week should be looking at 10kg and up, or you will run two loads every wash day.
Brand stock is thin in one direction. Hisense leads with 10 washers, SPJ has 6, Electrolux 3, and CHiQ 3. Samsung does not currently sell a washing machine on Yoola at all, only a freestanding dishwasher, so a Samsung washing machine search will land you on an imported unit with no local parts chain.
Power matters less than most buyers think. Twin tubs draw under 350 watts, so a load lands around UGX 350 to UGX 450. Top loaders pull 400 to 500 watts, putting a load at roughly UGX 700 to UGX 900. Front loaders cost about the same per load, but only if you wash cold. Switch on the built-in heater and consumption jumps, because heating water is where the energy goes.
Water is the bill people forget. Front loaders use the least water and detergent per kilogram of clothes. Twin tubs use the most, though you control it by how full you fill the tub. If you buy water from a bowser in a rental, that difference is real money.
Consider the sum over a year. Running a 500 watt top loader three times a week is about 78 units, roughly UGX 60,000 before VAT. The same schedule on a 300 watt twin tub is about 47 units, near UGX 36,000. The twin tub pays back its own price gap in power alone over a few years, but you spend 40 to 45 minutes per load doing the work yourself.
One caveat on those figures. UGX 779.4 is the average across the domestic bands, not a flat rate. The first 15 units in a month cost UGX 250 each, units 16 to 80 and everything above 150 cost UGX 779.4, and only units 81 to 150 drop to the cooking rate of UGX 412. If your household lands in that 81 to 150 band, your real cost per load is lower than the numbers above.
Buy a twin tub if you are under UGX 900,000, your water pressure is weak, or you rent and move often. It works off a jerrycan, uses the least power of the three, and any fundi on Kampala Road can repair it. Hisense and SPJ carry the strongest stock.
Buy a top loader if the laundry has to happen while you are at work. It needs steady pressure. If your tank sits at ground level and you live upstairs, budget around UGX 150,000 for a booster pump, or the inlet valve will not open reliably. Hisense and CHiQ have parts and service in Kampala.
Buy a front loader if you own a home on a level, tiled or concrete floor with a proper plumbing point, and you are past UGX 1.5 million of budget. It cleans better, uses less water, and treats clothes more gently without a central agitator. Wash cold and it will last years. It also spins at 1,000 to 1,400 RPM, and on a wooden subfloor in a rental it will walk.
Two more things matter in Uganda specifically. First, voltage dips. A stabiliser protects the control board on any automatic, and the board is the part that fails first. Second, buy the capacity you need, not the capacity on offer, because an overloaded automatic washes badly and wears out sooner.
