What each litre really costs, and the size that fits a Ugandan household
Deep freezer costs in Uganda start at UGX 565,000 for a 130-litre chest and top out above UGX 3.2 million for a 940-litre unit. We checked all 62 freezer listings on yoola.ug against their live product pages this week, so the numbers here are today's prices.
Deep freezers in Uganda cost between UGX 2,200 and UGX 5,400 per litre, and the price per litre falls sharply as size goes up. That single number separates a good buy from an expensive one. Here's the ladder, smallest first.
| Size band | Cheapest option | UGX | Per litre |
|---|---|---|---|
| 130L | CHiQ 130L chest | 565,000 | 4,346 |
| 150L | ADH 150L chest | 715,500 | 4,770 |
| 180-190L | TCL 190L chest | 753,500 | 3,966 |
| 260-330L | CHiQ 260L chest | 850,500 | 3,271 |
| 400L | TCL 400L chest | 893,500 | 2,234 |
| 520-560L | CHiQ 520L chest | 1,799,500 | 3,461 |
| 940L | Hisense 940L chest | 3,219,500 | 3,425 |
Read the 130 and 400 rows together. Going from 130 litres to 400 costs UGX 328,500 more: 58% more money for triple the storage. If you have the floor, small freezers are the worst value on the shelf.
Deep freezer prices in Uganda hide real gaps between listings of similar capacity. On each of these four, the cheaper unit is also the more sensible buy.
| What you're comparing | Better buy | UGX | Weaker buy | UGX |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Same money, more space | TCL 400L | 893,500 | TCL 260L (same price, 140L less) | 893,500 |
| Same brand, 330L | TCL 330L | 893,500 | CHiQ 330L | 993,000 |
| 250L class | CHiQ 260L | 850,500 | ADH 250L | 1,158,600 |
| Small units | CHiQ 130L | 565,000 | SPJ 130L | 704,000 |
The 250-litre case is the biggest gap at UGX 308,100. The CHiQ 260L at 850,500 holds ten litres more than the ADH 250L at 1,158,600 and costs almost a third less. Both are white chest freezers with nothing unusual in the spec sheet. That difference buys you a full year of electricity for the unit and change.
Not every dearer listing is a rip-off. Some carry a longer warranty or a different finish. Check the model code and warranty card before deciding, though on the four above the spec difference doesn't show on the product page.
Deep freezer size in Uganda comes down to how you shop. A household buying meat twice a week needs 130 to 190 litres. A family buying a whole goat or a bulk chicken order once a month needs 260 to 330. Past 400 litres you're either running a business or storing a harvest.
Then check the floor. A 400-litre chest takes roughly 1.3 metres by 70cm deep, so measure the gap beside the fridge before the price convinces you.
For the layout trade-offs between a chest and an upright fridge freezer, the chest freezer versus fridge freezer comparison goes through both properly.
A deep freezer in Uganda costs roughly UGX 95,000 a month to run at 200 watts on the Q4 2026 UEDCL domestic tariff. That's the honest figure for a mid-size chest unit running around the clock, and most households underestimate it badly when they budget for the purchase.
The arithmetic, using the tariff approved by ERA for October to December 2026: 200 watts drawn continuously is 4.8 units a day, or 144 units in a 30-day month. Under the domestic schedule, the first 15 units cost UGX 250 each, the next 65 cost UGX 779.4, and the next 64 fall into the UGX 412 cooking band. That's UGX 80,779 before VAT, or about UGX 95,319 with the 18% added.
Two caveats. Freezer wattage isn't printed on Ugandan listings, so treat 200 watts as a working assumption for a mid-size chest, not a measurement. And the bill depends on what else the house draws, because the tariff is a block structure. Add a fridge, a TV and an iron and you climb the blocks fast.
The unit you buy changes the number. A 130-litre chest pulls less than a 400-litre one, and an upright spills cold air every time the door opens. Over five years, a UGX 30,000 monthly gap becomes UGX 1.8 million.
The deep freezer brands in Uganda that make sense at each price point are CHiQ at the bottom, TCL in the middle, and Hisense or ADH once you pass 500 litres. That's the pattern the catalogue shows, and it matches what the per-litre numbers say.
CHiQ owns the entry point with the cheapest 130-litre and 260-litre units. TCL is the anomaly: its 400-litre chest at UGX 893,500 is the best value in the catalogue at UGX 2,234 per litre.
Hisense covers the top end with a 550-litre at 2,009,000 and a 940-litre at 3,219,500.
One brand does badly. Samsung's chest freezers are UGX 1,712,700 for 287 litres and UGX 2,165,450 for 371 litres, roughly two and a half times the TCL 400-litre per litre. If Samsung quality matters to you, that's the premium. If it doesn't, the gap is UGX 820,000 against a unit holding 113 litres more.
A solar deep freezer in Uganda costs two to three times a grid unit, which makes it a bad default buy and a sensible one in specific places. The ADH range is the practical comparison: 150 litres at 1,709,400, 200 litres at 1,374,450, 250 litres at 1,555,255, and 400 litres at 2,044,350.
That pricing is inconsistent: the 150-litre solar unit works out at UGX 11,396 per litre and the 200-litre at UGX 6,872. Check the specific listing rather than assuming the smaller unit is cheaper.
The case for paying it is narrow and real. A rural trading centre with no reliable grid, a health centre storing vaccines, a fish seller at the landing site. There a grid freezer with no power is a cabinet, and the premium pays for itself in avoided spoilage. In a Kampala house on UEDCL supply, it doesn't. The solar versus grid power comparison covers the wider system cost.
Most deep freezer failures in Uganda trace back to power, not to the compressor itself. That's the pattern the service side sees repeatedly, and it's worth planning for before the unit arrives.
Voltage swings come first. The compressor motor is sensitive to a supply that drops and surges, and the control board is the part that fails. A stabiliser costs a fraction of a new compressor. A single outage isn't the risk; a repeated brownout cycle is.
Second is a poor door seal. If the lid doesn't sit flush the compressor runs continuously to hold temperature, quietly doubling the running cost. Test it on delivery: close the lid on a sheet of paper and check the resistance around the whole rim.
Third is placement. A freezer in a hot kitchen corner with no airflow never reaches its setpoint. Leave 10cm at the back and sides.
A freezer at minus 18 is doing a real job. The FDA recommends that setting, and it's the temperature that stops bacterial growth rather than slowing it. Running at minus 5 to save power costs you food.

Browse Freezer PricesA deep freezer in Uganda costs from UGX 565,000 for a 130-litre CHiQ chest up to UGX 3.2 million for a 940-litre Hisense, based on yoola.ug prices in October 2026. The sweet spot for families is the 400-litre TCL at UGX 893,500, the cheapest capacity per shilling on the market at UGX 2,234 per litre.
A chest freezer usually costs less to run than an upright because cold air stays inside when the lid opens, while an upright spills it every time. Running costs also follow the tariff: at 200 watts continuously, a chest freezer uses 144 units a month, about UGX 95,319 with VAT on the Q4 2026 UEDCL domestic schedule.
A fully packed chest freezer holds its temperature longer than a half-empty one because frozen contents act as a thermal store. In practice a full 260-litre unit handles a few hours of UEDCL outage with the lid kept shut. Keep it packed, don't open it, and buy bigger than you need if outages are frequent.
