Where the cheapest fridge is good value, and where it's a trap
Cheap refrigerators in Uganda start at UGX 356,000. That's a Hisense 60-litre mini fridge on yoola.ug this month, and a usable 120-litre single door starts at UGX 442,000. So yes, you can put a fridge in your house for under UGX 450,000. The real question is which of the cheap ones is worth buying.
I pulled every fridge and freezer listed on yoola.ug and checked each price against the live product page. That turned up six cases where two fridges hold the same litres and one costs up to UGX 77,000 more. This post is about those gaps, and about the arithmetic that shows when a cheap fridge is expensive.
Cheap refrigerators in Uganda fall into three bands. Under UGX 500,000 buys a 60 to 120-litre single door. From 500,000 to 700,000 you get 120 to 195 litres. From 700,000 to 900,000 you clear 200 litres and most entry double doors. Here's the cheap end of the catalogue, cheapest first, at live listed prices.
| Model | Capacity | Price (UGX) | Per litre |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hisense 60L Mini Fridge | 60L | 356,000 | 5,933 |
| CHiQ CSR60DSK 60L | 60L | 363,500 | 6,058 |
| CHiQ 120L Single Door | 120L | 442,000 | 3,683 |
| SPJ 120 Litres Single Door | 120L | 488,500 | 4,070 |
| Hisense 120L Single Door | 120L | 490,500 | 4,087 |
| ADH 90L Silver | 90L | 522,500 | 5,805 |
| CHiQ CTM150DBIK 150L double door | 150L | 602,000 | 4,013 |
| CHiQ CSR195DSK 195L | 195L | 693,000 | 3,553 |
| CHiQ CSR230DSK 230L | 230L | 749,500 | 3,258 |
| Hisense 195L Single Door | 195L | 779,000 | 3,994 |
| Venus 120L Glass Door | 120L | 795,000 | 6,625 |
| CHiQ 230L Single Door | 230L | 826,500 | 3,593 |
Two things jump out. The 60-litre minis are the most expensive cooling per litre on the list at over UGX 5,900. And the ADH 90-litre at 522,500 costs more than a 120-litre CHiQ at 442,000. Sticker price and fridge size don't track each other.
Cheap refrigerator deals in Uganda are mostly not sales. They're two listings of the same capacity sitting side by side, one quietly costing more. I found six in the current catalogue, and on four of them the cheaper fridge is also the better buy.
| Capacity | The cheaper buy | UGX | The dearer buy | UGX | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 120L | CHiQ single door | 442,000 | CHiQ CSR120DSK | 511,000 | 69,000 |
| 120L | CHiQ single door | 442,000 | Hisense 120L single door | 490,500 | 48,500 |
| 195L | CHiQ CSR195DSK | 693,000 | CHiQ 195L single door | 739,000 | 46,000 |
| 195L | CHiQ CSR195DSK | 693,000 | Hisense 195L single door | 779,000 | 86,000 |
| 230L | CHiQ CSR230DSK | 749,500 | CHiQ 230L single door | 826,500 | 77,000 |
| 150L vs 160L | CHiQ CTM150DBIK double door | 602,000 | Hisense 160L double door | 824,000 | 222,000 |
The 230-litre case is the sharpest. CHiQ's CSR230DSK is UGX 749,500 and the plain CHiQ 230-litre single door is UGX 826,500. Same brand, same capacity, UGX 77,000 apart. That's a month and a half of electricity for the fridge at the tariff below.
The 150-litre CHiQ double door at 602,000 deserves its own line. The nearest Hisense double door is a 160-litre at 824,000. You're paying UGX 222,000 more for 10 extra litres, which is UGX 22,200 per litre. No fridge here justifies that.
One caveat I won't dress up. These are two listings of similarly named products, and I compared the model codes and capacities printed on each page. Colour and finish differ on some, and a glass door always costs more. Check the model code matches before you pay.
Cheap refrigerators in Uganda become bad value when the litres don't match the price. The test is simple: divide the price by capacity. Under UGX 4,000 a litre is a good buy at the cheap end. Over UGX 6,000, you're paying for a badge or a finish, not for cooling space. Run it on the catalogue and four listings fail.
| Model | Price (UGX) | Capacity | Per litre |
|---|---|---|---|
| Geepas GRF654 Mini Fridge | 908,500 | 60L | 15,142 |
| ADH 108L Double Door | 772,500 | 108L | 7,153 |
| Venus 120L Glass Door | 795,000 | 120L | 6,625 |
| ADH 98L Double Door | 624,500 | 98L | 6,372 |
The Geepas 60-litre mini at UGX 908,500 is the clearest case. It's the same 60 litres as a Hisense mini at 356,000, and it costs UGX 552,500 more. Unless you specifically need that Geepas model, that's money going nowhere.
The ADH 108-litre at 772,500 is the same trap in a different shape. For UGX 79,500 less you can buy a CHiQ 195-litre at 693,000 and get 87 more litres. The double-door layout is convenient, but losing 87 litres AND paying more is a poor trade.
To be fair to the Venus 120-litre at 795,000, that one has a glass door and reads as a beverage cooler. If you're buying it to keep soda cold in a shop, the price is defensible. If you're buying a kitchen fridge, it's UGX 353,000 more than a CHiQ 120-litre doing the same cooling job.
Cheap refrigerators in Uganda cost between UGX 43,600 and UGX 77,800 a month to run continuously, depending on compressor draw. That's under the Q4 2026 UEDCL domestic tariff, effective October to December 2026: first 15 units at UGX 250, units 16 to 80 at UGX 779.4, units 81 to 150 at UGX 412, above 150 back to UGX 779.4, all before 18% VAT.
Nobody publishes compressor wattage on Ugandan retail listings, so here's a range rather than a fake exact figure. A fridge drawing 80 watts around the clock uses 57.6 units a month and costs about UGX 36,950 before VAT, or UGX 43,600 with it. One drawing 150 watts uses 108 units and costs about UGX 65,950 before VAT, or UGX 77,800 with it.
That's a gap of UGX 29,000 a month before VAT, or UGX 34,200 with it, which is roughly UGX 410,500 a year. Both fridges might cost the same on the shelf. That's why the cheapest sticker isn't automatically the cheapest fridge.
Two things widen the gap in a Ugandan home. Voltage swings make a compressor run longer and draw harder than its rating, and a fridge in a hot kitchen with poor airflow never reaches its setpoint. For the full tariff breakdown, the complete fridge cost guide for Uganda covers it.
Cheap refrigerators in Uganda come with real deals attached, but they're in the shop's terms, not a discount banner. On yoola.ug, free Kampala delivery and pay on delivery both change what the fridge costs you, and neither shows in the listed price.
Transport is the one people forget. A fridge moved across Kampala costs roughly UGX 50,000 to UGX 150,000 from a shop in town, more up-country. That alone wipes out a UGX 69,000 gap between two models. Paying on delivery protects the other end: you can refuse a unit that arrives dented, and check the door seal before the money leaves. On a cheap fridge, a poor seal is the usual reason it's cheap.
Freezer buyers get the best value per litre here, though these are chest freezers. A TCL 400-litre chest is UGX 893,500, which is UGX 2,234 per litre. The TCL 330-litre is the same UGX 893,500 for 70 fewer litres. Same money, more storage, if you have the floor space. The chest freezer versus fridge freezer comparison explains when each suits a household.
One disqualifier, plainly. If the fridge has to run on solar or through no-grid days, none of the cheap AC fridges here are for you. They need mains power. See the solar fridges guide, because a cheap AC fridge on an inverter is the most expensive way to buy one.
Cheap refrigerators in Uganda go wrong predictably. The first mistake is buying by litre count while ignoring price per litre, which is how people pay UGX 908,500 for 60 litres. The second is buying the smallest fridge the budget allows, then finding a family can't live out of 60 litres.
A 60-litre mini is a hostel, office or single-person fridge, and two people cooking at home will fill it in a week. For four or more, 195 litres is the floor and 230 is comfortable. That sizing call is worth ten minutes, and the fridge buying guide for Uganda walks through it by household size.
The third mistake is skipping the warranty conversation. Ask what it covers and who honours it in Kampala, because a cheap fridge with no local service point stops being cheap once the compressor fails. Our Uganda fridge brand guide covers who actually has a presence here.
Last one, and it's the easiest to fix. Measure the doorway and the gap before you order. A 230-litre fridge that won't fit up a third-floor stairwell is a problem no discount covers.
