Solar fridges in Uganda cost between UGX 1,374,450 and UGX 2,044,350 at yoola.ug, all in stock as of October 2026. The cheapest unit in the range is the ADH 200 litre solar DC chest freezer, and the most expensive is the 400 litre commercial freezer. Every one runs on DC 12V/24V power straight from a battery, with no inverter in between.
That last detail is the whole point. A normal fridge is an AC appliance. Put it on solar and you need an inverter, and the inverter wastes power every hour it runs. A solar DC fridge skips that conversion entirely, so a much smaller system keeps it cold. Here is what each model costs and what it takes to run it.

Read that table twice before you pick a model. The 200 litre freezer costs UGX 334,950 less than the 150 litre freezer sitting just above it in the list. You get 50 more litres of storage for a lower price. On this range, price tracks the production batch and the door count, not capacity, so the cheapest line is not automatically the smallest unit.
The same applies to fridges. The 90 litre single door fridge at UGX 1,510,600 costs more than a 200 litre freezer. If you only need to keep drinks cold, the little fridge is fine. If you want to store food, the 200 litre freezer is cheaper and holds far more.
A solar fridge needs a solar panel, a deep-cycle battery, and a charge controller. You do not need an inverter, because the appliance takes DC power directly. The manufacturer specifies a panel and battery size for each model, and those figures matter more than the fridge price when you are budgeting the whole setup.

Notice the pattern. Going from a 90 litre fridge to a 168 litre fridge adds roughly 100 W of panel and 50 to 100 Ah of battery. That is the real cost of upsizing, and it is usually more than the price difference on the fridge itself. Budget the panel and battery first, then pick the largest cabinet your system can carry.
A solar DC fridge pulls very little power because it never converts DC to AC and back. A 90 litre grid fridge on the UEDCL domestic tariff draws about 0.5 kWh a day, which is roughly UGX 12,000 a month at the approved rate. The same job on a DC fridge costs you nothing extra once the panels are paid for.
Uganda's approved domestic tariff, published by the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL), prices the first 15 units in a month at UGX 250 each. Units 16 to 80 cost UGX 779.4, units 81 to 150 drop to UGX 412, and anything above 150 units goes back to UGX 779.4. All figures are before 18% VAT.
Those numbers are why the payback timing depends on where you live. A household on a reliable Kampala line keeps paying a monthly bill that a solar setup would erase. Pick by what you need to keep cold, not by the price list. A single person or a small shop keeping drinks cold needs the 90 litre fridge. A family storing week-long food supplies needs the 168 litre double door. A business freezing meat, fish, or produce needs a chest freezer of 200 litres or more.
Two more things worth knowing before you buy. The fridges have a separate top freezer that holds about minus 18 degrees, so they handle frozen food as well as chilled. The chest freezers are manual defrost, and because the lids seal well, ice builds slowly. Expect to defrost once or twice a year, and each unit has a drain plug to make it quick.
Solar fridges in Uganda are sold mainly through specialty solar shops and a small number of online appliance stores. Availability is the catch: most solar DC models are ordered in, and you can wait weeks or pay a premium for the few units a shop holds in stock.
