Dry Iron vs Steam Iron vs Garment Steamer

A dry iron is the cheapest way to press clothes and the hardest on fabric. You control the moisture yourself with a spray bottle. Geepas owns this tier, from UGX 109,000 to UGX 127,000.

A steam iron adds a water tank and steam vents in the soleplate. That lifts creases out of cotton and linen with far less pressing, which matters when you're ironing in a hot room. Expect UGX 187,500 to UGX 335,000 for a good one. The Braun TexStyle 3 at UGX 312,500 is the sweet spot if you can stretch that far.

A garment steamer hangs the clothes and blasts steam through them. No board, no pressing. It's slower for a crisp shirt but far better for suits, dresses and curtains. The Geepas handheld GGS25034 at UGX 134,000 is a good first steamer. The 2L GGS9695 at UGX 318,000 suits a shop or a busy house.

What an Iron Costs You to Run

Ironing is short bursts at high wattage, so the running cost is smaller than people expect. Under the UEDCL schedule effective 1 October 2026, domestic customers pay UGX 779.4 per kWh for units 16 to 80, and the first 15 units are UGX 250 for households averaging under 100 kWh a month (Uganda Business News, 6 October 2026).

A 2000W iron uses 2 kWh in a full hour of continuous ironing. Nobody irons for a full hour at a stretch. At 45 minutes a week, that's 6 kWh a month, or about UGX 4,700. A big household can double that and still stay under UGX 10,000.

Wattage barely moves that figure. A 1200W dry iron and a 2400W Tefal differ by a few thousand shillings a month. What does move it is leaving the iron standing hot while you fold the last shirt. Ten idle minutes three times a week is half an hour of element time every month for nothing.

What to Check Before You Buy an Iron in Kampala

Check the voltage rating first. Yoola's steam iron stock runs on 220 to 240V, which matches Uganda's supply. A 110V import won't work here at all, and a step-down converter costs more than the iron.

Then look at the soleplate. Ceramic plates glide and resist scratching. Plain metal plates snag on synthetic fabric and start dragging within months. The Geepas ceramic GSI7791 at UGX 187,500 and the Braun TexStyle 3 at UGX 312,500 both carry ceramic plates.

Last, buy from a supplier you can walk back to. Iron failures in Uganda are usually the thermostat or the heating element, and both fail early if they're going to. A warranty you can claim in a Kampala shop is worth more than an extra 200W.
