Moving Out in Uganda: What Appliances You Actually Need

Buy these six first, skip these four, and the real cost of each one

Moving Out in Uganda: the appliances that actually matter are a fridge, a cooking stove, an iron and a kettle. The trap is sequence: people buy a TV first and then eat out for six weeks because there is no fridge. The starter kit costs UGX 950,000 to UGX 1.3 million on yoola.ug this month, and every price below was checked against its live product page.

Moving out appliances in Uganda: buy these six first

The six appliances worth buying in week one: a fridge, a two-burner stove, an iron, a kettle, a fan and a stabiliser. That covers food storage, cooking, laundry, hot water and the two things that fail most on Ugandan power.

That's UGX 636,250 for the first four, before the fan or protection. With the fan and a UGX 60,000 stabiliser you're at UGX 877,750. If the wiring has never been checked, spend on the stabiliser before the fan.

What fridge should you buy when you move out in Uganda?

A fridge for one person or a couple in Uganda needs 60 to 120 litres, not 300. A 60-litre Hisense is UGX 356,000 and a 120-litre CHiQ single door is UGX 442,000. Both hold a week of shopping. Anything bigger is a monthly bill for space you won't fill.

Read the litre figure, not the exterior size. A 90-litre ADH at UGX 522,500 holds less than the 120-litre CHiQ at UGX 442,000, so the smaller cabinet costs UGX 80,500 more. Listings price by brand and finish, not by usable capacity.

Check the door swing too. A top-freezer double door needs clearance a bedsitter corner often doesn't have, so measure the gap before buying. On running cost, a 120-litre single door draws roughly 21 units a month, about UGX 17,000 before VAT on the Q4 2026 UEDCL tariff. A 560-litre side by side is roughly triple that. The fridge buying guide for Uganda has the full size breakdown.

Moving out cooking appliances in Uganda: gas, electric or both?

A two-burner gas cooker is the right first cooking appliance in Uganda: it works through a power cut and costs the least. The Blue Flame desktop 2-burner at UGX 103,250 is the entry point. A GlobalStar gas stove at UGX 147,500 adds a stand and a heavier frame.

The electric option is a false economy early on. It costs UGX 348,750 more and stops working when the grid does. The gas versus electric comparison runs the numbers.

Budget the cylinder before the stove. A 6kg refill and regulator is a real cost nobody quotes, and a stove with no gas is a paperweight.

Which appliances can you safely skip in your first month?

Skip the microwave, the TV, the water dispenser and the washing machine for the first month. That's UGX 289,500, UGX 329,500, UGX 420,000 and up to UGX 1 million that can stay in your account while you find out what you actually miss.

The microwave is the clearest case. The cheapest on yoola.ug is the Hisense 25L grill at UGX 289,500, nearly three times a gas stove that cooks a full meal. It reheats well, but it doesn't replace a cooker. The TV is the emotional buy: a 32-inch GlobalStar with StarTimes is UGX 329,500 and a CHiQ 32-inch digital is UGX 359,480. Both are fair prices and both are better bought after a month, once you know how much you'll watch. See the best TV brands guide for Uganda.

A water dispenser only pays if you already buy 20-litre refills. The Klass hot and cold unit is UGX 420,000; an UGX 84,000 kettle does the tea job. A washing machine is the one to defer longest: it needs a plumbing connection, a level floor and detergent money. Read the washing machine comparison for Ugandan homes first.

What does the electricity bill look like for a starter kit?

A starter kit in a Ugandan bedsitter adds roughly 60 to 90 units a month, about UGX 45,000 to UGX 70,000 on the Q4 2026 tariff. That's the fridge, the iron twice a week, the kettle four times a day and a fan overnight.

The ERA schedule for October to December 2026 charges UGX 250 for the first 15 units, UGX 779.4 for units 16 to 80, and UGX 412 for the cooking band from unit 81 to 150, all before 18% VAT. A small household under 80 units lands almost entirely in the UGX 779.4 block. Keep your six-month average at or under 100 units and you hold the UGX 250 lifeline rate. A fridge and a kettle can manage that. A freezer plus an electric cooker cannot.

The kettle is the surprise. Boiling 1.8 litres four times a day on a 2,000 watt element is roughly 24 units a month, close to UGX 18,700. Boil only what you'll drink and it halves.

If the wiring looks old, put a stabiliser between the wall and the fridge first. Voltage swings kill compressor control boards. The voltage stabiliser guide explains what to look for.

What should you add in month two and month three?

In month two, add a freezer or a rice cooker once the rent rhythm settles. A CHiQ 130-litre chest freezer at UGX 565,000 holds a month of bulk meat, and a Geepas 1.5-litre rice cooker at UGX 146,500 covers the rest of a Ugandan kitchen.

In month three, look at the TV and the washing machine together. Someone who eats out most nights needs neither.

One warning on freezer sizing. The deep freezer cost guide shows the price per litre falls hard as capacity rises, which makes a 400-litre unit look like the smart buy. In a bedsitter it isn't, because a large freezer runs 24 hours a day regardless of how much is inside.

On yoola.ug in October 2026 that set costs UGX 636,250: a 60-litre Hisense fridge at 356,000, a Blue Flame 2-burner at 103,250, a Geepas dry iron at 93,000 and a 1.8-litre kettle at 84,000. Add a stabiliser before you add anything else.

How much should I budget for appliances when moving out in Uganda?

Budget UGX 950,000 to UGX 1.3 million for a working starter kit, or UGX 636,250 for the four true essentials. yoola.ug prices in October 2026 run from UGX 84,000 for a kettle to UGX 565,000 for a 130-litre chest freezer.

Should I buy a fridge or a freezer first when moving out?

Buy the fridge first in almost every case. A 120-litre fridge covers daily food for around 21 units a month, while a freezer only earns its keep if you buy meat in bulk. A CHiQ 130-litre chest freezer costs UGX 565,000 and runs continuously, which doubles the cold-storage bill.

Is a gas cooker cheaper than an electric one for a new home in Uganda?

A gas cooker is cheaper to buy and works in a blackout. A Blue Flame desktop 2-burner is UGX 103,250 against UGX 452,000 for a Geepas double infrared electric unit, a gap of UGX 348,750. The electric unit also pulls 2,600 watts, pushing a small household up the tariff blocks.
